I'm going to an auction preview on Fri. in Blacksburg Va. and they have an 1896 Krag carbine listed. Did they make a carbine in 1896 and if so what should I look for in terms of originality as far as features of this carbine? An if anyone could give me a quesstimate price range to work in I would greatly appreciate it.:headbang:

Serial is right. When they get pictures up more will be known.

So we have an answer and the results are "mixed." It is a carbine. The good news is nothing really bad was done to it. The bad news is it'll take some parts to put it into presentable format. Specifically:
Rear sight is 1902. Needs an 1896c sight - hard to find.
Handguard is missing. Also not easy to find.
Sling bar and ring is incomplete. Not really a big deal.
I can't see much outside of that. Pictures aren't real clear.
All in all I'd say that if you can get it for a nice price I'd go for it. Nothing terribly wrong with it - it'd be easy to make it look good. Assuming you find a rear sight and that's the hardest part.
I like it.
What should you bid? Up to you. Given my recent buying spree the only assurance in life is I won't be bidding against you.
Cheers.

Thanks for the info. I'm going to try and snag it but that will depend upon how much I have to give for the Springfield 03/A1.

Just as a side note I think I have the parts you mention somewhere around here.:icon_scratch:

If it is the auction I'm thinking about, their guns are always what I'm willing to pay, plus $100!!:eusa_wall:

Little auction house that was. Never heard of them.
The days of "little auction houses" is really over though - they've all discovered Proxibid and equivalent. That one was up on Proxibid. Live bidding even.
My days of getting stuff at local auctions, unfettered by national competition, is coming to a close. Bummer.
stars+bars,do you have an original handguard for 1896 carbine? condition+ price ? thanks ed.
