I've got a new Old Eddystone that has the last 2 or three digits of the seral number on the bolt handle and on the floor plate. It has import marks so I'm assuming this was something one of our Allies did to these weapons. It there any way to determine which country did this. There are no foreign proofs on the rifle that I can see. Thanks for the help!

I have two with such numbers added. No import marks, no foreign proofs. They were supposed to have come out of Canada. I do not think Canada has any proof regs., such as England does.

I should think those other numbersaree assembly numbers to ensure that the rifle has matching bits when it is being put together,

canadians normally put the complete ser# on the bolt handle only, no other #'s added elsewhere.

So the plot thickens - it's probably not from Canada. Also, I would think that you would see numbers like this on all 1917s if they were assembly numbers and, as far as I can determine, this is not the case. Eddystone rifles advertised on Gunbroker and Auction Arms do not have these numbers. I've got the Ferris book on order - I opted for the slower than hell shipping - so it's not here yet. Maybe there's something about this?
