I just received a type 2 bolt body from Springfield Sporters and the copper set screw was partly drilled out. Any one know what size tap to use to clean up the hole so I can install a new copper set screw.

Bob,
The copper piece is a plug, not a screw. Once the head space was set, the copper plug was drivin' in so nobody could screw with the head space. Have a nice M2 rifle, the bolt has not been messed with and it shoots like a champ. Are you restoring an M2? Herschel will set this straight if he chimes in. He's the expert.

lancebear, You are partially correct. The early type 2 M2 bolts had the set screw hole drilled and tapped for a true set screw. The later one had the copper plug. Sorry I can't help with the thread size and pitch.

I bought the adjustment screw from Numerich about 6 mos ago. I installed it in a spare bolt I had and headspaced to my rifle so I don't want to remove it to check thread size.
Since it appears your going to need the new screw anyway go ahead and check with/order from Numerich. If they have it you should be able to proceed with your repair. HTH..:icon_salut:

Thanks for the replys. I was able to remove the remains of the copper plug and a 6-48 screw fits in the hole.
