Got a catalog from CDNN in which they advertise S&W M&P15s with the "carry" rear sight, collapsing stock, etc. for $699 after a $100 rebate from S&W and $14 shipping ($713 total). I paid $869 for mine and thought I got an excellent deal. Of course, I did get the rebate on the 5 free magazines. You only get the one "issue" magazine with this offer.

Do you know if SW makes these ARs or are they made by one of the other makers with Smiths name added?

I assume S&W makes them, but in any case, from what I've seen, they have an excellent reputation. There is an article about the newer S&Ws in the latest issue of American Rifleman.

I read one article which said the first ones made, ~2006, were made by a contractor and that S&W has increasingly made parts in house. In 2010, S&W makes almost every part. Do a web search for M&W M&P 15 reviews. The dick Dick Metcalf piece was published about 2006 I believe http://www.shootingtimes.com/longgun_reviews/swmp15_121906/

The S&W AR 15 is a Stag Arms rifle built to S&W's specs, with a few aftermarket add-ons.
