Hi Guys, my first post on this forum. I received this from a friend whose dad had it on the wall for 40 years or so (he went to a nursing home). Any ideas what it is? Other than a rusty dug up gun? TIA, Steve

It looks like the remnants of a U.S. M1842 musket at a guess.Thousands of these were purchased by settlers going west.Any details as to where and when it was found?

JB, it would have to be a guess because I can't seem to get in touch with my friend. It could have been found as long ago as just post WW2 and maybe in the Paducah, KY area or here in central Iowa. It was given to my friends dad in lieu of payment for goods at a time when he was a clothing traveling salesman. It could be a battlefield find also.

It's a pretty good guess. After reading JB's reply to you I took a better look at the pics. The lock, buttplate, and inletted sidebar all imply 1842 Springfield.

LOL I cheated,I've got an 1842.From the looks of that one it almost appears like it was under water for a long time.
