I just bought an 1989 Krag #189xxx and it is a project. I thought I expand my collection from Garands and Carbines and 1903's to a Krag. Can anyone tell me where a web site might show me how to break down the rifle so I can start cleaning. My biggest problem is with the bolt. It's almost froze in place. I have been soaking it with Kroil along with other parts. The rifle I think has potential but I am looking for a web site on how to break it down and any tips on cleaning and getting the rust out.
Thanks
Yep, Kroil "the oil that kreeps" is a good approach. Ne[/URL]eds some time to work, but that Krag is patient. Here's a $7.00 manual. HTH

http://www.surplusrifle.com/uskragrifle/rifledisassemble/index.asp You most often don't have to drift the band pin as they suggest, the band will open enough to go over it, metal things in wood for over 100 years don't like to come out.

Thanks for the info. Somehow I missed the instructions on SurplusRifle.com. The Krag I bought has a carbine stock without any cartouches and just quickly checking serial numbers I don't think this was orginally a carbine. I am patiently letting the Kroil work on the screws holding the trigger guard in place so I can get the stock off. Overall it has pitting, cracked stock in several places and if I can get the bolt loose and the stock off I would like to see what the rest of her looks like. A whole new history to learn.
