Amen, but the first news footage that got back to England was of Canadian troopies landing. The American film guys lost all their film. There is no 6 June American film footage. From either beach.

They lost all the film into the drink from Omaha. Utah film still exists.

I will state the obvious to you older guys but in the interests of the current generation: THe reason the film history of our American landings is lost is because the
beaches we landed on were hostile and we had to fight our way over them. In the luck of the draw, the American beaches were the worst to be landed on. We almost floundered and got destroyed in detail on Omaha Beach.

This is not to slam the other allied landings that day, just to remind Americans here of the later generations that we had a helluva hard fight to gain those beaches.

Sunray and JBWhite both got it right: In order to insure that the film footage was safely returned to England and American officer was detailed to gather up all the film personally and take it back. When transferring from the landing craft to the ship, he dropped all the film into the drink. Some pictures do survive because one photographer was not located in time, so held onto his film.
