Sam a little more information would be helpful here for the members to be able to answer your question in detail.

a) what model of rifle is this ex; Long Lee/ No1 Mk3/ No4 Mk1/ N05 etc.

b) Manufacturer ex; BSA(M47C) Fazackerly/Lithgow etc

This will make it easier for us. Many Lee's over the years might have overlapping serial numbers between model types/ different manufacturers.

As to year that will probably in all likelihood be a guess for anyone here. Sometimes a good guess can be made.

For instance the No1 series of rifles had the date of the mfg on the right side of the Butt Stock Socket.

Whereas the No4 series for the most part were not marked but having said that the Longbranch rifles were usually dated a lot of Savages Lee rifles were dated later savages were not.

Hope someone here can help after you tell us what it is.

What I know about Enfields is next to 0. On the right side under the bolt handle there is A crown under that is GR under that is B.S.A.L.O. under that is 1940 under that is sht. LE. under that is three marks. On the top flat on the barrel is stacked arms also on the bolt handle. Hope this is enough to get started on if more is needed I will see what I con do.

Well since the date is stamped there, it was obviously made in 1940;)

Now not sure if I remember this correctly, Either After 10,000 or possibly 100,000 a letter was added to the prefix and the numbering started all over again.
So given the date of 1940, the reigning monarch was George III
BSA; Birmingham Small Arms The SMLe stands for Rifle, short, Lee enfield. (as opposed to its predcessor which was about 8 inches longer.

Also, the stacked arms logo indicates the rifle was originally intended to be a commercial variant. The Royal Cypher shows it was used as a martial arm instead.

B.

Goerge III was around the end of the 1700's (a wee bit before this Enfield)
Surely just a slip of the finger you meant George VI

"George VI (Albert Frederick Arthur George; 14 December 1895 – 6 February 1952) was King of the United Kingdom and the British Dominions from 11 December 1936 until his death. He was the last Emperor of India (until 1947), the last King of Ireland (until 1949), and the first Head of the Commonwealth".

Hi. Send your buddy here. http://enfieldrifles.profusehost.net/main.htm
"...Hope this is enough..." Where is the rear sight? A No. 1 Mk III's is on the barrel. A No. 4 Rifle's is on the receiver.
Thousands of both models have been assembled out of parts bins with zero(0) QC. Matching numbers does not mean the headspace on either rifle is OK. Only checking it with proper headspace guages does that. Tell your buddy to have the heaspace checked before shooting it.
George III presided over the American Rebellion. Apparently, His Majesty's Forces failed to put down the rebels.
