View Full Version : Smith Corona barrel question
The Smith Corona barrel in the link has what appears to be a screw hole in the side of the barrel threads. See pictures 6 and 8 in the attached link. The barrel came off of an original SC barreled receiver. The hole does not go into the chamber.

I've had several SC's but have never had a loose barrel. What the purpose of the small hole?
Thanks,
Cass
The barrel was taken off a receiver that was drilled and tapped. It probably had a two-piece scope base, each one having two holes. I think Leupold one-piece bases have two holes up front, also.
Mike:
Thanks, I see it now. It's good to get my first stupid question of the year behind me, ha!
Thanks,
Cass

I have been bidding on this barrel (for a spare), but the bid has gone from 150 to 175. Maybe I am just making some poor soul, who really needs it, to have to pay more, so I will drop out before it goes higher. Looks like still a good price for SC and date matches my rifle. Do you think the drill mark on barrel threads would have been a problem? In my field of elec. work, any dent etc. to a "leading thread" will grind-off other threads when screwing it in.
Plan on shooting that new SC A3 alot, don't ya, Tom! I would guess the threads smoothed out a little upon removal, also.
Take your time on finding a barrel, and I'll keep an eye out for ya.

Thanks Mike, for the decision making. I imagine a "thread file" could have cleaned up those 2 threads, but whats the hurry, right? I see S/C and I want it. It is 2 months off on rifle date. Probably the closest date I'll ever find but the rifle is sporterized so it will never matter.
SC barrels pop up on a more or less regular basis, just not near as often as the regular supply of RA barrels.
The one in question has a very nice finish and will probably exceed $200.
