SA GAW Stock

Could anyone tell me if the SA GAW stock cartouche was only used on rebuilt rifles? WW2 years only?. I found a nice Springfield rifle 810,000 range with a 32 dated barrel and J5 bolt. Stock is very nice with the SA GAW cartouche and I was wondering about the configuration. Thank you

Yes,...SA rebuild and overhaul WW2.

It actually broadens the view of what could be correct for the rifle. Sounds like it is not far off from the original time period to boot. :)

It's a very clean rifle that looks un-messed with but the receiver serial number, barrel date and stock cartouche has me wondering how they ended up together. I've seen rifles put together that look like they were just put together, this one looks like it's been this way awhile. The bolt finish looks like black parkerizing and the receiver barrel combination is a lighter gray like you tend to see on WW2 finishes. The stock, finish and bore are very clean un-used looking. I suppose it may have been rebuilt and sat somewhere awhile.

SA GAW rebuild stamp on WW2 Winchester M1 Rifle stock. I have seen 1903A1 stocks with the SA GAW stamp and had a 1903A3 stock with the SA GAW rebuild stamp too.

No problem, really. The receivers, when sent in for overhaul, were often refinished the same "tone" as the barrel. It is hard to say for certain when the barrel was fitted - barrels were often stored for weeks, months or even years before they were used. I can say that the SA/GAW was only used for overhauls i the 1943-44 time period and was not "original" to any M1903. Keep in mind that the philosophy at Springfield and other arsenals was "Part is parts". There is a possiblity the 1932 barrel could have been in storage since it was manufactured or taken off another rifle.

Thanks for the info guys, I'm a bit rusty on some of my info. I keep an eye out for 03's in my area but don't usually make to many gun shows. This one showed up in a local shop at a good price so it's now on layaway.
