View Full Version : remington 541X rifle
A friend has what he is calling a Remington 541X, 22 cal rifle, US property marked which he says is from the old DCM, still in the shipping box. Can anyone help with any information on this rifle? Thanks in advance, Ken

The one I bought from CMP a few years ago came new, with sights and inserts, but no magazine. IIRC, CMP says it has some used ones which will be for sale some time this year.

I too bought a new one from the CMP a few years ago. I don't think they were ever sold through the DCM. It is a decent entry level target rifle.
Same here, bought one from CMP. Good shooter. Wish I bought two or more.

I bought mine back in the 90's for $250.I ended up selling it because no matter how hard I tried i couldn't get a good cheek weld. The last one I saw recently sold for $500.

I bought mine from the CMP back about 10 years ago or so. It was $240 + shipping. New in the bag with all of the sight inserts. Came with a heavy very trigger stock. Worked it down to 1 1/2 lb and turned out to be a great rifle. Mounted a scope on it couple of years ago for rodent control. At 100 yards on a wind free day all holes will be touching. ( with Remington high speed solids ammo )

I also purchased one about 6 years ago, a used one, from the CMP. It looked about new. The only problem was the force required to lift the bolt to cock the rifle. It was impossible to do with the rifle shoulder mounted. I ended up polishing all internal bolt parts and even the inside of the bolt body. That pretty well cured the lift problem. Did anyone else have a similar problem with this rifle?

Mine is as you describe. I've tried polishing the cocking cam to little avail. I'll try polishing the bolt ID.

Cecil,
Based on the buttstock, I think the 541x rifle is a prone gun and not meant for position shooting.
I, too, have one of these guns and the only time I can see the sights is in prone. HTH.

Guys, I have found that I have to tip my head forward in order to get my eye lower in order to line up the sights properly. It is a bit of an unusual postiion but it does work. Rick
Outback Gun Parts had new old stock magazines for the 541X on special recently for $25.00 plus shipping. I don't know if they are still on sale or have reverted back to the regular price of $35.00. BTW, they have parts for many old models of rifles and shotguns. A member of the CMP forum recommended them to me when I was looking for some obsolete parts and as it turned out they had almost everything I needed.

I got a new 541x also had a hard bolt lift..as well, they are rare as only a small # of guns were made.. I see J&G has a few of them for sale lately. I think there are much better target 22 for a better price.. but I had to have one for the collection... B2B

Greetings all. Were the U.S. 541X's all dark wood with oil (Matte) finish? A fellow had a "Blond" with glossy finish U.S. marked 541X at the Las Cruces, N.M. gun show this past weekend, asking $250.00. No sights and safety didn't work (Not really an issue for me as long as it fires safely), VG-Excellent condition overall. Muzzle & crown looked excellent. Wasn't too sure about the finish though (Refinished?). In any event, I passed. Have a custom built Anschutz Match 54 competition bench gun and a Winchester 52D so I had a bit of trouble justifying buying the 541X even at that price. Mistake? Looked like the one pictured here:

Mistake yes and no.. $250 is a good price but missing sights and broken safety makes it a little bit harder to move I'd have offered 200 and see if you could get it, off him.. they are a rare gun..as not many were ever made... only about 5 K.. B2B
