Hi All,

Very glad to be posting on an outstanding new site. Kudos to the Webmaster!!

I disassembled my SA Oct 1942 Garand in anticipation of getting new furniture for her. Well that never materialized and I now find myself saving every penny for a wedding (mine).

In anticipation of the new wood, I ordered a new lower band and pin (solid instead of hollow) and the new band is smaller than the original. The original Lower Band was epoxied or bedded to the front and rear handguard, in addition, it was screwed into the front handguard.

We've discussed this on the old forum and although the receiver was bedded, there are no "NM" markings on any of the parts. It looks like a club gun before it was sold thru the CMP (2003); it has a "21" painted on the stock and then it was shellaced all over. It has a Square "P" on the pistolgrip.

The Barrel has an "M" stamped in it with two rectangular stamps further down the thicker part of the barrel. The standard markings show "SA 6535448 9 65 MD44"

Could the barrel be too thick for the new lower band or were there lower bands that might be smaller? That wouldn't make sense for uniformity.

I will try to post pics soon.

Thanks!

Try a can of caned air - invert can spray barrel - do this outside as there is a stink agent in the can - assemble while barrel cold - may need a little tap

I'll give that a try. She's back together with the old wood until I have the cash to buy some good stuff.

Another option is to heat the Lower Band. A couple minutes close under a desk lamp often does the trick.

I usually drive the Lower Band on with about a 2ft length of 1in plastic pipe.

The newer roll pin is better than the old solid type. They're a standard pin; get one at a hardware store.

You want the Lower Band to be tight.

Maury is right as usual, 1/8x1/2" rollpin, get a rollpin punch while you're at it. they have a teat at the end that fits inside the pin to keep it from crushing. Only a couple of bucks but, worth it.
