When you get a low number to look up (anything under about 53000) you need to abate your excitement until you verify that the number IS what you seek, since M1868 rifles, M1869 cadets, and shotguns each have their own series, independent of the others. Thus, below about 1380, you have four choices.

Well let's see.The notes at the bottom of the page in the SRS books indicate "S" stands for "shotgun".The serial number is listed,the next column says "Model".I assume when the "Model" is listed as "81S" that indicates a "shotgun" and not something else.
