Stopped at the local gunshop today to talk for a few minutes. Went back and the gunsmith was sandblasting a Ithaca 37 receiver. Had cut down to 20 inches a 30 inch barrel. The barrel had a small dent a few inches back from the muzzle. The owner was the owner of the shop and he'd had this since he was a kid. From the unblasted portion of the blued barrel (the cut off section) the finish looked to be at least 70%. He was having it cut down for a home defense gun. When I looked at the receiver I saw "UNITED STATES PROPERTY" also a P and the letters RCB. The P and the RCB were a bit hard to read after the blasting, however the USP was still strong. The 37 will be parked this evening. The stock was checkered (replacement?). Almost had a heart attack when I saw what it was and what was being done.

It is R L B
The checkered stock is likely original. It was a commercial gun.
Damn shame. It is (was) a collectible gun.

Found out more from the owner. He has had it for 35+ years. His Grandfather gave it to him. When he got it, the shotgun had a short barrel, doesn't remember if it had a handguard or not. He replaced the barrel for a long barrel for hunting and reblued it himself.
