My daughters boyfriend showed up Friday with a 91/30 he was interested in buying and wanted some advise. The owner let him borrow it and shoot it. He had 12 rounds of the brown bear hunting loads. The barrel looked bright and tight very well defined rifiling. It was not dull or dark. The bolt looked prisrine as did the receiver which looked like a hex shape. The stock had that ugly red varnish removed and all of the rebuild markings are showing. It has 1934r on the receiver in front of the ssn. I am a Garand guy and have very little knowlege of these guns. He wants it for a cheap shooter. I only got to shoot it twice but at 50 yards I almost used the same hole. He didn't have too much ammo. I told him at 150.00 it looked like a good buy. Questions are / did I advise him right and what bullet weight would shoot best in these guns? I did advise him that cheap surplus for this is corrosive and he will have to clean it well right after he shoots it. TIA for any help.

Two dealers were selling 91/30's at a gunshow yesterday. Both had nice displays. One dealer wanted $110, the other $115 for re-arsenaled rifles, including sling, bayo & some sort of leather ammo boxes.

The hex reciever ones fresh from rebuild are bringing a little bit of a premium. I think in today's market $150.00 is high so I'll secon Kirk on that. Here in Houston pristine fresh from rebuild model 91/30s go for $75.00 to $100.00 depending on whether the stock is laminated or not, whether the reciever is hex or not and whether it comes with any additional goodies like slings, oilers, cleaning kits, cartridge carriers, bayonettes etc.

A 1934 w/hex receiver in really good condition, if it functions really well, and if he likes it, and especially if it groups really well, and not way off point of aim at 100 or 200yd with a reasonable sight setting, I would make a counter offer on that rifle.
