View Full Version : Front post
I obtained a 1917 for Military bolt action matches at my club. I couldn't see the front post. I recently took it to a local gunsmith who modified a Mauser post ground it down so it was just higher than the origonal post and much wider I staked it in and now it looks good to my eyes. I am looking forward to trying it out. He gave me a hard time as it was almost all correct , but a got the gun as a shooter. If and when I need to sell it , i'll disclose to the buyer that I modified it and give him / her the correct post. The gun holds the 10 ring at 200 yds with a standard SR target. When younger eyes shoot it.

S&S FIREARMS sells replacement front sights in different heights, which fixed my problem in this regard.

you can use a P14 front sight. they are a bit taller then the 1917 front sight...the base however wont fit without modifications.

Then you could always have painted the front sight. There is a kit of several small bottles with various colours "Bright Sights" High visibility gun sight coatings. Have resorted to that.
Just ordered a complete set of 9 front sights off eBay. Really need a high front sight so I'm hoping the tallest British sight will be tall enough. Still on a quest to find some Bren front sight blades and if I can get use of a drill press I may bore a hole and put in a pin like the Danes. If anyone has an extra Bren or Danish sight blade I'm in the market to buy.

I've got a CAI import marked, Winchester M1917 with both Canadian and Danish markings on the stock. The front sight has a roll pin in place of the blade, which really provides a sharp sight picuture. I alway though some individual here in the States did this modification, but I was interested to see your comment, that this was done by the Danes.
My problem wasn't the height it was the width of the post. The modified post seems to work better than the issued one.
Had the weapon out yesterday and shot it with good results.
I've installed a danish roll pin sight on my 1917, but haven't had a chance to sight it in... However, I do like the change. Makes it easier for me to concentrate on the front post when aiming vs. the original post.

You can also use SMLE #1 or #4 front sites, they are the same product and the Smelly sites are offered in like five different heights.
If your interested let me know and I will dig you up some web sites that sell them.
