Learning a lot from the folks here; always searching for more and came across an old for sale listing. Apparently a couple years ago Rock Island Auction Company sold a Model 12 Winchester Riot Gun in 16ga.

I had no idea such a creature existed. Was wondering if anyone had any more information on these or any other 16ga shotguns used by the military.

The martial markings look questionable to me. The US and bomb on the receiver look like they were marked after finish. The only Model 12s I have seen marked after finish are some very early guns in the 920,xxx range that have a big "U.S." mark on the receiver. Every Model 12 with both the US and bomb on the receiver were marked before finish. Also, the WB and crosssed cannon mark on the buttstock look questionable to me. That gun requires a hands on inspection.

" The receiver and various components have nearly all of original Winchester factory blued finish, however the barrel finish has been professionally restored along with the barrel marking being partially remarked. The barrel also has been shortened. There is a slight raised edge around the muzzle of the barrel where it was cut off. The roll markings on the side of the receiver are correct in shape and size, however they were applied outside of the factory. The stock and forend are both in excellent condition with 98% of their factory finish with clear cartouches. A very scarce 16 GA riot shotgun.

OK, so the barrel is NOT a riot barrel, and has been refinished. The receiver markings are not "factory".
As well, the receiver does not show the "thumbprints" from hardening, indicating a re-finish
Look at the S. There is one place it does not come through at all!
Either it was polished off, or this was done with a pantagraph to copy original markings.
The gun is a total fake, in my opinion. I would not pay anything for that.

I know little to nothing about martial shotguns,BUT, is it my eyes or does the "S" in US appear upside down? It may be the pic or the lighting but the top bow appears bigger than the lower bow. Nick

This shotgun should be B.S. marked, not U.S. Pure fantasy.

Too much, no matter what it was.

The U.S. and ordnance bomb show the tell-tale chatter marks of being pantagraphed.

The ad clearly states that the shotgun in question was altered on the barrel & receiver to appear to be a US riot gun. They admit that the receiver markings are spurious & that the bbl is cut off. didn't ever find out what it sold for to someone who I'm sure had a massive case of buyer's remorse after he got home with it.
