I was going to write a review and here it is, I liked it. for better reviews go to Amazon (13 fives, 1 four)

Here is an incident from the book that I had never heard before: Forrest received an interesting endorsement from Captain Collins of the Freedman's Bureau, who had traveled up from Vicksburg to do his own investigation. Collins “expressed himself highly pleased with General Forrest's management of the freedmen on his land, saying that his plantation in all its details of comfort, hours of labor and recreation had excelled any plantation advantage of the freedmen, he had seen.” Now for the criticism! Forrest was accused of being too liberal and indulgent with the freedmen on his plantations. Collins was amazed at the scale of pay at Forrest's operation, saying that he has made “advances of too liberal a character” and he could not believe that Forrest allowed them “to purchase and carry firearms.” Collins went on to conclude that he did not think the ex-slaves could handle the type of freedom and personal responsibility that Forrest was granting them and recommended that he no longer tolerate armed employees on his land. The report further suggested that this relaxed manner and forbearing treatment of the blacks on his farm and plantation was an aggravating factor in the death of Thomas Edwards.
