Was told by a Vietnam vet that he had been issued an M-16 that had FoMoCo stamped on it. Did Ford build M-16's or parts for M-16's?

Never heard that before. Mine was Colt.

Hydra-Matic division of GM did, though. This is probably another instance of the memory playing tricks: it happens to us old guys. I've had several folks swear they had been issued or seen an M16 actually marked 'Mattel', but no one has ever come up with one to inspect, or even a picture of one.

Well, could be a smart@$$ in an armory stamped it FOMOCO too or the guy could be full of it. Was just wondering if it was based on any actual fact. Probably right up there with the Singer carbines or my Uncle whose carbine fired the same 30-06 round as the garand. The guy didn't seem dishonest and his only vietnam story he wanted to tell was about spending all day behind a 60 and having his ears ring for 3 days afterwards. Didn't even claim to kill or save anyone in the process.

I have a G.M Hydra-Matic M16A1 that is probably what he was talking about just could not remember what car maker it was made by.

Seems like I always drew the same Hydra Matic from the armory every time we dispatched to the missile field in Montana, circa 1973-1979.

How many contractors made complete rifles?

I have inventoried thousands of M16 undergoing the rebuild process at NSWC Crane. I encountered Armalite, Colt, and FN.

How many contractors made complete rifles?

US or foreign too?

Add Harrington & Richardson for the US:

"In wartime, H&R answered the call to duty. During World War I, H&R was an important producer of shoulder-type flare guns. In World War II, the company was a major producer of military firearms, earning many commendations from the U.S. armed forces. It produced the U.S. M1 Garand rifle, was the largest single manufacturer of the M-14, and one of the major producers of the M-16." - http://www.hr1871.com/about/default.asp

Did Armalite actually make any production ones for the military? I didn't think so. Colt, GM's Hydramatic, H&R, and FN. That should be it.
