Nice one indeed, John, especially with the factory letter. Congratulations on your find. I looked for the other one you mentioned that was for sale at the show on Saturday, and never did see it. I suppose someone else probably beat me to it. Oh well, there's always next month.

Nice looking Victory and nice to see all matching. Should be a good solid shooter as well.
Who knows what kind of stories that gun could tell.

Here is a photo of me with my trusty Victory Model aboard the USS F.D. Roosevelt in 1960 planning a flight.

1960...
long time ago, but seems like yesterday.
SN's are located on the back side of the crane also. You must remove the crane and cylinder to see it. That makes 6 locations that I've found on both my Navy and 38/200 Australian.
Frame, barrel, cylinder, extractor, right grip, crane
Take a look if you already haven't.

...the guy had to have reloaded. Squib load followed by others. Way too little powder or contaminated / degraded powder charge. Is it a .38 special or a .38 S/W ? Looks like a 5-incher to me.

Here is the rest of the story. I got caught in a gunfight in South Vietnam and the VC did understand that I was a non-combatant. I stepped out from behind a tree, and came face to face with a VC of about 14 who had an AK and this S&W. He raised the pistol in my direction, so I shot him twice in the chest with my M14. He fell against a tree and I kicked this pistol from his hand then picked it up and saw the bullet protruding from the barrel. I stuck it in my pack and moved on.
When I had a chance to examine it, I saw and felt lumps in the barrel so I suspected that there were more bullets in it. I tried to remove the bullet which is BTW a tracer, with no sucess, so I waited until I got home. I removed the barrel and using a Dremel Tool, I cut the side and removed the strip and found that it had nine bullets in it! The barrel is marked 38 S&W but the cylinder is .38 Special, and it had WW II dated USGI ammo in it. The frame and cylinder have matching SNs, so the barrel came from another gun. I was working for a gunsmith at the time, so I cut the locking lug from this barrel and made a 10" barrel for it. I shot it with great success and when I started working the gun shows, I reinstalled the barrel in the receiver, neat huh????
The frame is marked "CIVIL DEFENCE". When , how, or why it wound up in the hands of the VC we will never know, however I saw some strange weapons while in 'Nam....:icon_scratch:

Note that you can see the tracer material in the first round.
