A friend asked me for some help finding information on the value of a Moisin Nagant sniper rifle he has.

I know nothing about them so I am asking here after doing a bunch of Google searching. From what he tells me it may have been a Vietnam War trophy but there is no capture paperwork.

He says it is stamped 1943 on the receiver ring above the S/N and that based on the markings described (hammer and sickle in a wreath and an arrow in a triangle), I think it was made by Izhevsk.

The S/N on the bolt (bent) matches the receiver.

He says there is a scope mount base on the left side of the receiver. There is also a number (scope S/N?) stamped on the left side of the barrel shank or the receiver ring.

The scope mount and scope are LONG gone.

From what I was able to find via Google, it sounds like a legit sniper rifle, although the mount and scope are missing.

He says the bore is terrific, the metal finish is thin but there is no rust and the stock is in fair shape.

Anyone care to take a ballpark guess at value?

I see RGuns has complete rifles with scopes for $800 for whatever that is worth.

Thanks.

If you can find an original scope and mount and they are out there, then it would be in the same value range as the originals RGuns is selling. I would guess without the scope and mount then maybe half the price of a complete original and only because the scope base is on the receiver and the stock has been relieved for it as well as the matching bolt.

JGsales are selling theirs in same type config for about 4-450. Also check out price in the shotgun news mag.

Mike, The MN snipers J&G are selling are the repos made by Century and not originals like the one Garandy has.

Thanks all. I'll pass along the info. Does the lack of an import mark do anything for the value?

Yes it does. R-Guns sells legitimate snipers that are arsenal refurbed for $800. Any sniper rifle that retails under that is a reproduction built with real or repro scopes and mounts.

Real scopes and mounts are available for $400 or so. I haven't really priced them lately since I'm not likely to buy one. depending on condition, and if the scope mount is intact, that non-import rifle could go for $500 or more easily. Add a LEGIT scope, and it should be worth more than the $800 R-Guns rifles. Hope this helps.

Any gun W/O important stamp is worth way more in my opinion. The early ones (tiny things stamped on bottom of barrel are tolerable) but the newer ones, large all over reciever, added serial number, etc. are not!

Thank you both.

Small import markings could been removed easily and rifle can passed as non-import - I would look at the receiver and barrell: if there is an evidence of polishing anb than cold or hot blueing.
