Goex???

I am up in N Idaho at my brother's place, and another brother rolled in it was a funeral service for our stepmother. Anyway, today we took the rolling blocks out shooting. Paul, the Sandpoint bro, has an ARgy with a .444 Marlin barrel duplicating the original. I have another Argy in 45-70, also duplicating the original bbl with the short octagon piece, then tapered round.

Anyway, I was shooting about 65 gr. of GOEX behind a 385 soft lead bullet. Eric, the Oregon brother said it didn't smell right. I said the gunshop told me GOEX **was** black powder. It smells fairly sulfurous, but yeah, something is not quite right.

Is it is, or is it ain't??

I think you are confusing GOEX BRAND of BLACK POWDER with Pyrodex (which is not BP).

BTW, the 45-70 barrel is likely a Numrich Arms barrel from the 70's.

Guys, I definitely have the GOEX in the red can. Not a word about it being anything but BP. As for the barrel, mine was cut from aWhitworth-style blank with an almost hexagonal bore, by Roy Bedeaux in Albuquerque. I gave him an old .43 Spanish barrel to duplicate from, and told him I was probably not gonna shoot anything but BP and lead bullets. It looks great, is dead-on accurate and fouling doesn't seem to bother it at all.

Unless some one changed the contents of your can I'd say its black powder. Did it stink when you cleaned it?

Ah, the signature Aroma of Black Powder.........!! That and when you rip open a paper cartridge with your teeth and taste some of the poweder inside............!!!! An acquired taste to be sure.

I say you have black powder based on the smell test.

If you ever use a blow tube, DO NOT INHALE!!! I like the smell not the taste.

In years past our ML club had two shoots a month. Shoot very little ML any more, but seem to remember that on high humidity days the burned powder had a different odor from low humidity days.
