Gentlemen:
I thought other members here would enjoy seeing this recent photo of Remington 870s on the range. This is an official USAF photo. The caption to it reads:
Members of the Nevada Air National Guard's 152nd Airlift Wing practice using 12-gauge shotguns June 14, 2011, on a firing range at Reno Air National Guard Base, Nevada.
Some airmen are also seen armed with the Beretta M9 pistol.
A retired USAF pal of mine who lives near Reno thinks that the caption may be wrong in that he does not recall there being a firing range at the Reno ANG Base. He thinks this may have been taken at NAS Fallon or elsewhere. Anybody recognize the range?
Neat guns!
Regards,
Charlie Flick

A friend of mine with good contacts at the NV ANG has learned that the location of the photo is actually at Range 17 at NAS Fallon, often used for NV National Guard qualification and match shooting.

I wonder how those are spec'd. Can't quite make out barrel length and mag extension. Speedfeed stocks? Also what rail/barrel clamp?

THe fellow in the foreground doesn't seem too excited about shooting the 870. He has a poor stance and apparently is hesitant to really hold the gun. In fact, those on down the line seem about equally excited. ......
Looking again, is the person in the foreground a woman? Sure has dainty hands. If so, that explains a lot.
Shotguns are the Remington 870 Modular Combat System (MCS), with 18" rifle sight barrel, and 7-shot magazine extension. Spec's can be found at:

I am betting female.

I've ofteh wondered why so many apparently inexperienced shooters, and particularly women, adopt that odd stance of leaning backwards and place their cheek and eyes so far back from the sights, both with shotguns and rifles. That stance provides the most unstable shooting position and enhances the felt recoil, not to mention that it diminishes control of the shotgun after it has fired. Why don't these "instructors" step in and actually instruct these people in the proper method and stance to fire this shotgun? The AF spent a lot of our taxpayers dollars on these guns and all they have firing them are apparently a bunch of noobs. That seemingly applies to the "instructors", too.
If you think thats bad you should see the apparent lack of concern regarding marksmanship in the ARNG. Apparently since optics are mandatory in-country we no longer need to worry about it I guess. Sad.

Kind of a typical amatuer kid/female shooting stance. She is trying to get away from the gun. Loose stance, she thinks it will hurt less.... Of course, she is really giving it a running start.

Improper training on the part of the "Instructor", who then passes it on to the student. Had a Navy Chief MAA that wanted to tape down the grip safety on an M1911A1, because the way he gripped it he couldn't make the grip safety so it would fire. He got really smoked when the Jarhead Gunny(me) said "to learn how to hold the pistol right". He did and was able to qualify......
