View Full Version : Duplicate Serial Number Search
I got a CMP Garand a while back, but my buddy just found out is is duplicated with one from Duff's list. So, it may be an example of the stamping machine getting hung up when it tried to roll-over too many digits.
So the question is: who has a duplicate to mine?
Serial Number is 5443199.
Thanks!
Dave
PS Is there a dupe list somewhere? I checked the s/n list (excel) here, but found nothing.
Are the duplicates the same maker?
Both are SA rifles.
My rifle: 5443199, heat lot is A51H. Barrel date is SA 1 55.
Duff rifle: 5443199, Heat lot A60, Barrel Date SA 12 54
My rifle is pretty much unused, based on the wear. No rebuild marks. My guess is that these rifles were made right at Christmas time, 1954. So maybe the s/n stamp operator was not paying full attention to his machine! (based on stories from Hummer, about sticky wheels).
I don't know how to interpret the heat lot numbers: are those 2 adjacent/close to each other on the sequence??
And FYI, my Duff data comes from one of his pubs, page 83, rifle #194. Serial Numbers with original barrels.

I answered similarly on the other boards post you did on this, Dave but I never heard back from you. Did you ever give Scott a call? If not, why don't you give him a call? www.scott-duff.com perhaps he can tell you more about the one in this list, (ownership, etc...) also, maybe a misprint in the list? You mentioned on the other post that it was in a book, where is it listed? A book or a list? What do you mean above by "Duff's list"... ask your friend where exactly he saw your serial number.

Thanks Mike. We have not gotten a response from Mr Duff yet. His data is from " one of his pubs, page 83, rifle #194. Serial Numbers with original barrels. " I can ge the name of the book, if that helps.

Don't know if this qualifies as a duplicate or not or even if one actually exist however my newly aquired SA ser.# 25176xx falls into a bloc assigned to Winchester according to my references "The M1 Garand 1936-1957" by Joe Poyer and Craig Riesch 5th ed. and "The M1 Garand: World War II" by Scott Duff 2nd ed. I'd be curious as to how this SA got a number that was originally assigned to Winchester and if there is a duplicate somewhere. This rifle was a private purchase but I believe it to have been purchased from CMP a few years ago. It has a Jan. 1944 SA barrel which agrees with the receiver and the reciever drawing number and heat lot agree as to correctness as per the references already cited. The barrel isn't chromed at the gas port. It is pretty much a mix-master overall having had a H&R bolt that I've replaced with a SA-12. One other interesting thing, the right receiver leg is electro penned BA4 6-66 and the face of the breach appears to have been parkerized. The receiver is a light olive green parkerizing and the barrel is much darker the stock and handguards appear to be walnut and I believe to be a SA but all markings including proofs have been long ago sanded or worn away.
swfan601,there is a lot of documentation of the ser. nos. that are in the blocs that have potential duplicates. Thing is, I think I've seen one actual set of rifles that shared the same numbers.
