I’m looking for a scope for a stock Ruger 10/22 carbine. Old eyes just can’t cope with the iron sights.
I have a Winchester M69a .22 rifle fitted with a Redfield Sportster 4X scope with a duplex reticule that I set up in the olden days. I gave up on the regular “.22” scopes for dusk and dawn and woods shooting because they were so dim and cloudy.
At that time the Sportster was the best scope you could put on a .22 rifle. It had high power optics, quality and ruggedness, with a ¾” tube with 1 1/8” objective lens and 1 1/4” eyepiece, and milled rings. The Sportster was head and shoulders over any other ¾” scope for brightness and resolution and choice of reticules. In those days, it cost about $75 dollars for this scope for my $39 dollar rifle.
As I look over photos of 10/22s with the current crop of 1” scopes, the rigs looks very top heavy and out of scale. One thing I always liked about the Redfield Sportster, beside the improved optics, was that it was in scale to the Winchester M69a.
How do you think the Sportster would compare to current mid cost 1” .22 scopes for hunting and plinking?

Mine was a LOT more scope than the current jobs coming in from "P.R.C.". I had it mounted on a new Belgian Browning T-Bolt, back in the early 70's, and I sure as heck wish I had that rig now!
At the moment, I've got one of the steel tubed Leupold "Alaskan" 2.5X 7/8's inch tube jobs on a grooved 69A, and it does a fine job, with typical Leupold optics in a scaled down package. Down side is that they're scarcer than the Redfield, and cost more IF you find one!
Compared to the 'current mid-cost .22 scopes'......at the prices they're selling 'em for on blister packs at Wally World, if you bust it, you pitch it in the trash and get another. Till then, they seem to work just fine with a bit of care.

I have 3 Weaver R7's. They are excellent scopes for the money. Abt $135.

I saw one of the Redfield 4X sportsters today at the Wanenmacher Arms show in Tulsa. it was priced $225.00 and had a set of Redfield Rings that clam on the dovetail. They are out there but not cheap.
