have a riot shotgun, Winchester 1897, 20" barrel, solid frame condition appears all original. Serial number is in the military range for trench guns for WW1. Did the Army use riot guns in WW1? Looking for a price and any further information. The barrel is marked CYL.

Serial number is E 650908
Wood is marked HDQTS

I didn't see a military proof or markings on it. I have one from the 1930's. Mine is probabily a police riot gun, doesn't seem to have been used much.

It's a Richmond Police Department (RPD) riot gun. A bunch of RPD trench guns were sold off a few years ago. Several were marked like your riot gun. RPD had acquired the trench guns from the Military. But I don't know if that's where they got the riot guns from.

To be called a trench gun, shouldn't it have a handguard and bayonet lug? BK

Sorry, I misunderstood Tom's comment...thought you were mistaking RPD's riot guns for trench guns, but your comment made a clear distinction between them. It's interesting that a police department bought trench guns but I guess they were cheap (then!). Anyway, the next time I'll read twice before posting a response. B
