This was posted on another board..
"I've just come back from the range where I was surprised to see an original M1A1 with a higher number than suggested by my M1 Carbine book. It's serial number was 633X,XXX making it from November 1944-January 1945. The guy who has it has only recently bought it. It was supposedly air dropped in the previous owner's back garden during the war, and he's had it ever since."
Were M1A1's being assembled that late?
