Got a case of Russian .22 ammo that's steel cased. When shot from S&W 317 Airlite, the case seems to expand and are a pain to extract from the cylinder. Asking for advice other than to not shoot the ammo. I mean I got a large case.... Can anyone tell me if it will eventually work out or any other step I can take to solve the problem ? Semper Fi

I would imagine the steel expands but does not spring back like brass does. I see nothing you can do about it.

He's right -- that's how it is, and there's nothing you can do about it.

Two recommendations:

1. Sell the ammo

2. Carry a block of soft pine and tap the ejector rod to drive the cases out.

... but has anybody tried lubing the cases?

I once had a shooting station at a machine gun shoot. The guy on my right was shooting a French 7.5MM Chatterault (sp?). In order to keep it firing he had his buddy continuously spraying the bolt with some type of lube.

Just a thought.

Some machine guns (and other guns) were designed to use lubed ammo Our sevices have always rejected such designs. The ammo is difficult to handle, picks up dirt, and is otherwise inconvienent. Just too much bother!

I have some steel cased Russian .22 ammo. I got it back in the 1990's. It has a kind of lube already on it (pig fat for all I know). It's dirty ammo but pretty accurate. Sticks in my .22 revolvers too. Functions best for me in a .22 Ruger Mk 1.

Lightly lubing the chambers might help.

Thanks Jim, think I'll try that and see how it works....

Thanks Vern... I've used a cleaning rod section and poked them out, but careful I don't damage the ejector rod. ( Never use force, get a bigger hammer) Semper Fi devildog
