A gentleman posted some pictures of his M1917 on www.surplusrifle and asked about the stock marking. It has a 5-pointed star on the left side below the bolt catch mechanism. In looking at the picture, I also noticed a pin in the stock, that looks that those on early M1903A3 stocks.
Any idea what the stamp and the pin indicate? A WWII replacement?
Here's the link to the post, if you want a look:

Rick, the 3 1917's I have (one of each maker) all have that pin through the receiver area. As for the star, that I can't say.

pin the same type used on the 1903A3 to add strength,
not sure about the star..

Star doesn't look like any military stamp, also looks pretty crisp to be an original anything.
Just my take.

I've never noticed pins on a M1917 stock before. I'll have to look at mine.
My Eddystone has a star as well. I never could find out where it came from.

All my stocks have the pins, Remington, Winchester and Eddystone.

i had a few stocks made by Milton Bradly, they had cross bolts, not pins.

Mine all have the pins near the bolt handle and the cross bolts for the front receiver recoil lug.

Match 223 is correct, had to go look at a stock to be sure, just never really gave it much thought i guess.

I also have a M1917 stock with the five pointed star. It is pinned, and if you look to the right of the star you can see another faint star.

could this star be associated with the early Winchesters, star in a circle??

early Winchesters have a star in a circle stamped on the left upper area of the receiver,
same sort of star, i must admit, iv held more then a few 17,s and never noticed a stock with that star,
but, most the 17,s i get to play with are usually barreled actions, lately.
Check the length of the stock on the ones with the star marking on the wood, compared to a standard stock. I have one with an identical star marking that is about 1/2" shorter than a standard M1917 stock. It is not cut down, but it is proportionately shorter from trigger guard to grip and from grip to rear swivel. The distance from rear swivel to the butt is standard.
Let me know what you find.

they offered 3 lengths of stocks for the M1917..
they offered 3 lengths of stocks for the M1917..
Three lengths were fairly common in the P14 stocks. There was also some documentation of three lengths for M1917 stocks that Ferris mentions. He also mentions some different observed dimensions, but there have been very few examples observed. I don't think the short or long stocks were issued in any significant numbers for the M1917's.
If any of the other star marked stocks happen to be shorter, then maybe we have a reason for the star.

i would say, dig out those tape measures, and compare.

...this same topic is under disscusion over on the carbine board. Some sort of post-mfg inspection stamp , perhaps? Or , maybe it means two different things at two different points in time ?

Just to stir the pot...this is a shot from a British issued Winchester P14. No, I do not own it.

I have 3 1917's. The remington has a stock that is 1 inch shorter than the other two. The difference is in the length of pull.

Harrisons book on the 1917 Enfields show a line drawing with dimensions for the three different lengths. All of mine, Rem, Win and Eddy are the same length. I also have an un-issued replacement stock that is the same length.
Gary
Just for the record, my Pattern 14 stocks also have the pin (but no stars)
