View Full Version : Anyone familiar with the .450 Nitro Express?
Has anybody ever made any mild loads up for this round with Trail Boss?
Are .458 hard cast lead bullets OK for this bore, or should I use .452? I have both for 45-70 and 45-90 loads that I regularly use with TrailBoss.
I cannot find this caliber listed by any of the makers of bullets for the old British calibers. My copy of "cartridges of the world" is not accessible right now due to snowstorm.
They seldom follow the conventional diameters.
I suggest you drive a very soft .458 bullet or a .50 round ball down the bore and measure the result.
Except the base diameter is slightly bigger, according to wikipedia (if they are to be believed. Good news, Hogdon has some loads listed for the 45-120, I assume they would be safe in the 450 Nitro (its a modern Ruger#1 rifle). I need to do a little more research but I am stoked now.

Finally got to my garage where Cartridges of the World lives. You are lucky that the bullet diameter for this one is .458.
Not many of the old British rounds used this diameter bullet.
I am considering purchasing a No 1 in .450/.400, which uses a very unusual diameter bullet, unique to this round. Makes reloading much more difficult.
Yep....I lucked out all right, since I cast and size .458 bullets regularly for 45-70. With Trail Boss, it should make a nice, sedate load for deer. I'm not planning on hunting any elephant, but the rifle was too nice to pass on.
The hardest part here is building up a collection of brass.....$3+ per case!
