It's not so sad if it restores a beater to service. Both my sons built Krag sporters last year out of parts I had. Drilled receivers and chopped off barrells with cut down rifle stocks. One shot his first buck with his "new" Krag.

Kind of like grandma in 6in. heals and a micro mini skirt. If I saw it at a gun show I might have to look to see if my shoe laces were tied as I shuffled by and muttered to myself. My first Krag was someone's project. Drilled and tapped and dropped into a Bishop stock. Bubbaed but it looks like a sporter. JB

I guess you could take that contraption off, fill the holes with JB Weld and put on a decent set of iron sights. Then you would have a "carbinesque" sporter, probably a pretty good hunting rifle.

Just a thought.

I have no problem with sporters, cut rifles or downright Bubbas!
I do have a problem with the guys who alter firearms in order to make them appear to be something legit when they are not. A few years ago there was a guy on eBay renting out a "JSA 1896" stamp so you could make your own cartouche for your "authentic SA stock".

To-day an original rifle is worth 6-700 and up. You must remember there was a time you could not give them away. 10-15 bucks at any gun store and that was not that long ago, not talking about the 30's when DCM sold them for a buck and a half! 2.50 for carbines.

You don't have to go back to the thirtys. I have purchased more than one Krag for $30 to $50. And they were NOT cut down. My nicest 96 has only $165.

That rifle needs an M14 flash suppressor/front sight like one of our members has. Looks to be the Krag Haus long rail, though it's too fuzzy to say for sure. I have an LER scope on their short rail which fits through the handguard. Great for load development.

After collecting several pieces/parts from cutdown/sporterized rifles that I have rebuilt, I found a stock that begged to be built into a Northern Michigan/Wisconsin Deer rifle. Never thought that I would build up a sporterized rifle, but it has turned out pretty nice & used up previously altered parts. Am awaiting warm weather to sight it in.
Even sporterized rifles exemplify a part of the Krag's history.

I just happen to be reading this post and thought that I would include a photo of my Krag Target Rifle. I got this rifle a while back from my "bug" man who gets to go in those little corners of our homes seeking out vermin. This was a Krag that someone tried to "sporterize" with a hacksaw. I had barrel turned down for a M-14 flash hider with a National Match front sight. Rear sight is a Lyman 48K with target knobs. Rifle shoots very well for something over a hundred years old. probably get flamed for saying this, but I like it,

I would never do it to an original, but should I get hold of a bubba'ed, I might,,,,

it actually looks great compared to one I saw at a show this weekend,

I saved the auction, just incase I get that wild hair, (and it goes cheap!)
