I'd appreciate help with a CMP Winchester Carbine, SN 57127XX. It has a Winchester receiver and barrel and a smattering of other manufacturer's parts, but I need help with the rear sight and front band. I believe the rear sight is Winchester and was wondering if it could have been original to this receiver with 4 stake marks? My second question is help identifying the front band. It appears to have a "Q" on it. I can provide more pictures if needed. TIA for the help - John.

The reference I have says that type II milled Hemphill sights (what you have is a type III stamped) were used on your serial block BUT Riesch also indicates that there were some interchangability between Type II and III to the end of production. I have a 7-mil Winny from the end of production with a milled type II that I know is original, so the interchangeability between the two may depend on what was in the bucket when it was assembled. I don't have a reference for your band.

I have a 5,6xx,xxx with a type 2 band that is unmarked.

Your band is a post war replacement as your carbine would have had a type 2 band when made. The type 3 rear sight is correct for your serial number range as both the type 2 and type 3 were used at the same time.

Does the barrel show either/or (possibly both) a "PW" inside an oval and "W" proof mark when the band is in place? If the barrel band covers the mark when the band is in place, the band was changed to a type 3.

That's exactly the case. With the band in place, the oval PW is hidden. The band comes just to the edge of the punch mark on the top of the barrel, which is about 2-2 1/2 inches further up the barrel than the oval PW. The "W" is then another 1/2" or so from the punch mark. Thanks for the help.
