Picked up the most beautiful, unissued Eddystone M1917 at the Montgomery Gunshow yesterday. The gentleman that I purchased it from ordered it out of a magazine in 1967. It is flat mint and in the original shipping box (it cost $2.28 to ship on 16 Jan 1968...) unfortunately it is not an arsenal box and he didnt have the bill of sale.
My main question is above the trigger assy there is an Eagle proof and a US in a shield. I have never seen a US in a shield before and looking through Ferris's book, I dont see anything mentioned about it. I'm thinking it might possibly be a way to help identify it as US 30/06 in the Rack?

Any ideas???

PS Anyone interested in seeing pic I can send them to you... Kenny27@aol.com

Looks to have been parkerized, probably at least a US Arsenal rebuild.

Sorry, its original finish. The receivers and trigger housings were a type of early parkerizing but everything else is blued...

Thanks....

The early park on the eddy's was used after 11/1918. I have one from 1/1919 and cannot hardly tell it from blued. I do believe yours looks to be a later park, but the photos do not always do justice.

LoneWolf, Mine is barrel dated 11/18 and shows by serial number range (1.26 million) to have been assembled 12/18. Send or post your email address and I'll send you pics... Kenny27@aol.com

Is that a lend lease gun that would have gotten mixed in with P-17's in WWII Brit home guard stores?

Remington made some Lee Enfields in .303 didnt they, but I dont recall them making any 1917s in .303?

Krag,
No, I dont think it was a lend-lease gun as it doesnt show any of the common traits (BNP proofs, Red paint, etc) and it is definitly 30/06. I was thinking down the same road as you as it might have been a way to mark the M1917's in england to show it was a US gun. Still really no idea...
Thanks,

Kenny
