It's a model 1898 but looking to know what year it was made. The rear sight has a hump to the base, no sure what type of sigt it is. What else do I need to know about it? These are the only 3 pics I have of it right now. Thanks

1898 - the cartouche is correct on date. Rear sight is a replacement - later than the rifle. The sights were "upgraded" in service on a wholesale basis.

Picture of the sight from the top would help.

I thought you only came out around Christmas?

Thanks, wasn't sure if it was a model 1898 built at a later date with wood added later. What year is the sight? I've got to find the camera cable to take top picture.

Mostly is Christmas, that's why I have 38 posts, but I needed to make an exception for this rifle. I paid $850 for it, there's only 2 or 3 dings in the stock and she shoots like a champ.

Depending on what the back of the sight is, it's either an Model 1902 or an 1898.

1902 going by the height of the hump. There were only 40 some odd thousand 98s originally equipped with the 98 sight, serial #'s around 217400 to 253000, beginning in June of 99 and ending in March of 1900. Serial #'s and dates are approximate. This particular rifle would originally have had a model 1896 sight.
