Well about this time five years ago I was just about finishing up nailing tarps over my missing roof sections. My family and neighbors had all already meet in the debris filled roads at sunrise to view the devastation we had managed to survive through during the night ... Hurricane Ivan had left a nasty calling card.
We took the task at hand, neighbors helping neighbors. Plain folks just helping strangers. We didn't riot, loot or go looking for a news camera to go complain in it's lens. Had to much to do than to waste our time on that foolishness. In the following days assistance from throughout the USA poured into the area all coming down from the north. Our eastern and western highways were washed away. In time the sea of FEMA blue temporary roofs led way to plywood and shingles. The sound of chainsaws and strong smell of southern pine and oak disbursed. Power and phones were restored and the internet with CSP was once again available.
Like New Orleans our President (Bush) arrived and assessed the area damage. There were never an outcry it was his fault or that of our government. We live in an area like most of the country....prone to the whims of mother nature. Although most of us did stay on our own to ride out the storm, we understood we were at or just above sea level and not in a bowl beneath it. We've all got to make our own judgment call, these storms will occur again you can count on that. Will I stay or flee next time? Time will tell......but what ever the case it will be a choice I make and not the fault of someone else.
By the way......Thank you America for the help rendered.
