I have a type 38 that is missing the upper barrel band. I picked one up from Numerich arms.
I am running into a problem installing it. It seems to be a line to line or slight smaller diameter than the wood that it is supposed to sit on. As I try to drive it on, I am starting to peel some wood. I quit as soon as I saw a bit of wood push up, so no major damage.
I know Japanese MFG was not that great, and maybe the tolerances on the wood and metal parts required some hand fitting. Since the original barrel band was lost, I don't know if maybe it was tweeked to fit at assembly.

Anyone with experience know if this is typical? I am tempted to polish the ID of the band. It is fairly rusty on the ID anyway.

Suggestions?

Are you certain they sent the right part. They have been known to send the wrong part but I have had good luck with them. If you can post a picture of the band I will compare it to mine. and also look for burrs people sometimes use the wrong tools when removing them .

That is correct with burrs on the edges from people driving them off with a screwdriver...it may also be out of shape...that is why you are peeling the wood...do not force things on...you might want to try and lightly tap it back into shape with a plastic/rubber mallet...
