View Full Version : 6.8 spc
Do any of you have, or are building a 6.8 SPC AR platform? What twist and chamber do you have. How is your reloading for the perfect cartridge? Have any of you hunted with the 6.8 yet?
THX,And enjoy your springtime,
I was an early adopter. Used a 20 inch post-ban M1S barrel/bolt ( only other choices at the time were $500+ barrels from Douglas blanks which didn't make sense to me ) with a 1:9.5 twist. Don't recall if there was a SAAMI spec for the chamber at the time, but it certainly wasn't the later SPC II ( IIRC the proper designation ) that is in favor now. Bullet options were somewhat limited at the time and I remember buying once fired R-P brass from PRi for more than new Remington prices ( well, listed prices -- brass was near impossible to find and I had a case of R-P on backorder from Midway for 6+ months ). The accuracy was only so-so ( 1.5 MOA ) and I soon tired of the upper. When I built a space gun for High Power competition chambered in 6WOA ( 6.8 SPC necked down to 6mm ), most of the new 6.8 brass was used for that gun. I eventually ordered a 20" stainless barrel in 6WOA and replaced the 6.8 SPC barrel and prefer the accuracy of the 6mm variant. I've taken both the 6.8 and 6WOA hunting, but never had a chance to use either on game.
If I was interested in acquiring a 6.8 today, I think the 16" White Oak Armament barrel offered by John Holliger would be just the ticket...
Have a Kotonics ( now defunct ) 16 in. 11 twist spc11 chamber. shoots sub MOA with 110 g projectile, 29.5 g H322=2600fps. It takes down deer and lope if hit proper.
Don't know if I'd call it the perfect cartridge but, it don't do too bad in the ar platform.
THX 4 the input gentlemen,Bob
Just put together a 6.8 AR for myself and I really like it. I used the Adams Arms piston system and a Yankee Hill Machine barrel and bolt and it seems to work great. The gas port on the barrel had to be opened up a little because it was under spec but other than that everything is going fine so far. I can't wait to really put it through it's paces and get some accuracy and chronograph data together. I think that the 6.8 may be about the perfect round for the AR-15 platform and am looking forward to using it extensively in the future. I'm also thinking about a bolt gun in this round too.
I made fun little video of the AR and you can watch it here:
Hope this helps. Good luck.
I have a Stag Arms 6.8SPC Hunter model and love it. I have not shot any game with it yet - only range time with a Aimpoint Comp M2. My usual offhand target is a railroad plate at 200 yards.
