I was having a discussion the other day with a friend of mine who was trying to tell me the muzzle velocity of of the M16 was 4700fps with the NATO rounds that the military uses. I said that if the civilian version shooting .223 is somewhere in the neighborhood of 3000fps, I have a hard time believing that the NATO round is 1700fps more. Maybe a little more than the civilian versions but not nearly that much. If the NATO round was that much "Hotter", would you be seeing split cases from the pressure or you would almost need a bigger case for more powder wouldn't you? Anyway, just a question I had. Any thoughts?

The current M4 carbine has a Muzzle Velocity of 2,900 ft/s.

The 220 Swift attened around 4200 fps and that has a VERY large case.

If, and it's a big if I remember correctly when we trained on the M16 we were told that MV was around 3100 fps. That was in 1967.

I think you are correct, or at least, very close, when talking about 55gr M193

That is the same guy that saw another guy shoot a 1 hole group at 300 yrds. with a sniper rifle. How else could you explain only one hole in the target!
