Default "Stars" on a M1903 stock?

I was asked on another forum what the significence or meaning was of two small star stampings on a M1903 stock. Anyone know?

    Rick,

I've seen that on the toe before, but never on the side.

I've always assumed it was a stock inspector's stamp similar to the small ord wheel found on the bottom of the pistol grip on the SA/EMcF and SA/GAW Garands.

I've also seen it in front or behind the trigger guard, can't remember which. It has been brought up before, but no explanation.
