Default Garand Serial Number List, Rev 8, XLS Format

    New Link:

    http://members.cox.net/mdoerner1/Gar...er%20List8.xls

    New news:

Valid abbreviations for manufacturer (make) - SA, WRA, HRA, IHC, BMB, and PB. Valid abbreviations for source - CMP, DCM, and Pvt Purch. Other than that, no news is good news....

    Old News:

Some of you have asked, "Why should I put my number in this list, you from the gubernment or some other nefarious organization after my gun??!" Short Answer: Nope. This list was originally conceived by someone else, who wanted to duplicate Scott Duff's data page examples for public viewing. This would allow easy access to new data on Danish, Greek, and any other variant not covered in any of Duff's material. Then that site got hacked bad, and the database couldn't be repaired. Someone on the CSP forum was kind enough to post the output text before the site was shut down.

So what is the purpose of this list now? I see two reasons 1.) See if you hit the S/N lottery (i.e. a S/N next to yours making a consecutive pair) and 2.) if you see a S/N you'd like to learn more about, you can PM the owner here on the CSP board, if that alias is the one used here. Hopefully we'll get a better idea of what was Greek, Danish, in Museums, Demilled/Destroyed, etc. to see "what's left" after the entire Garand production run. OK, 'nuff said.

For new entries, from now on, the fields are to be delimited with COMMAS, NOT SPACES.... Here are some examples....

    Serial_number,Owner,Source,Make,Notes

    2264738,mdoerner @ CSP,CMP,SA,VAR Barrel 3-66
    2431541,mdoerner @ CSP,CMP,WRA,Greek Return Rifle – Rebarreled to .308 Winchester
    5880066,mdoerner @ CSP,CMP,SA,BBL 5-55 SA Greek Return Rifle

00339988,I Have Way Way Way Too Many Spaces In My Alias,CMP,BMB,General Patton's PERSONAL Freakin' Garand

All of the above listed are in an acceptable, correct format. 5 data fields separated with 4 commas.

(But please, don't add a SA,**INC.**receiver to the list, they're commercial and don't mean anything in the context of this listing)

DO NOT USE MORE THAN 4 COMMAS PER DATA STRING**(or else)

For now, if your M1 has a SUFFIX in the S/N, please put that in the notes, NOT in the serial number field, as it plays heck with the sort filters.

Also, I have added known serial numbers from GCA Journals Volumes 22 thru [current volume] (sorry, that's all that I got.) If you have earlier issues, I consider those published S/N's fair game. Those S/N will be attributed to GCA Journal, not an individual (kinda like getting a museum piece's S/N.) Also, if you know of a Garand in a museum, grab it's S/N and let's get it on the list.

But please, do not enter someone else's S/N even if you see it clearly on a post. I want this to be voluntary and public information. If they want it in the list, let the owner do it. Also, clipping the last digits on your S/N means I can't put it in the list. Following the incorrect data format keeps you out of the list too. If you don't want it seen on the internet, but want it in the list, PM me.

Honestly, is it that hard to use the format that THOUSANDS of entries have been made with so far? Is reading the directions at the top of this page THAT difficult?!?!?!

Well, Mike, it is after all YOU that wants the information. Dumping on folks that HAVE the information just because it doesn't fit YOUR format sorta makes me want to keep my stupid damned old information to myself. One can but wonder how many others feel the same way.

A little sugar just might work better.

1.) I don't need the info, the list is provided to all. If you want to participate, follow the rules published at the top.
2.) Since my time is being used to gather, processes, and publish the info, I reserve the right include and exclude data I see fit.

That includes people who "blurt out" information. I have been doing this since last summer, and I've seen lots and lots and lots of "new" ways of posting information at CMP. Point is, I do not have the time the screw around with people's new ideas on how to do things, especially if they don't read the directions. I have MY system that is efficient for me. If you can't bother to read the directions, you shouldn't complain about the system.

Besides.....sugar is a commodity that is going up in price. Why should I have to pay to get others to play? If you want in, follow the directions. Post the info here or PM me. Hundreds of others have gotten their info into the list, so this ain't brain surgery here......

Examples are in the directions. Ciao.
