If you're not really into ARs and don't plan to practice a lot and become proficient, don't buy one for home defense. Use what you're best with - I'm thinking pistol or shotgun.

all BS asside, a 20 inch pump shotgun loaded with #7 shot will work best in a home protection weapon. easy to use, not a lot of skill needed to hit your target.
#7 shot will kill at less then 30 Feet, and not go past the walls in your home,
attach a little flash light with a pressure switch, chances are when your going to use this weapon, it will be dark, youll be in your boxers, bare foot, not seeing well, and its hard to hold a light and gun at the same time, and see that what your pointing at is a bad guy, not the drunk kid from next door that mistakingly walked in your house..

above actually happened here, even though the home owner wasnt charged, think of what he has to live with the rest of his life..
had he had a flashlight attached, he would have made the kid, and likely just got him home to sober up.

its cheap to set up a shotgun this way. a nice pump..150.00 200.00
the light wth mount, 90.00 to 100.00.
and they work well.
and if you like, you can paint it pink, blue or what ever color you like.

well, that is your right...
however.
i dont lock my doors at night, never have never will, and i live in a large city.

i am a very light sleeper.
if someone walked into my home, and this has happened.
they would have a firearm pointed at them, common since tells me, to ask,
hey! whats going on,?whats up??your in the wrong place.
if its someone i know. that lives next door, or down the street for that matter, am i just going to shoot, and aske questions later???no..
imagine the media having a feild day with that, gunsmith in North Denver, kills 92 year old lady, she walked into the wrong house, he opened up on her.
the police find over 300 guns in his house, assault weapons ect..

18 years ago, after my divorce, i rented a nice apartment for a short time.
they all looked the same from the outside.
one night, i hear my front door open, and someones keys hit my table.
i figure its my exwife looking for a little action???lol.
then i hear a mans voice talking to himself.
i grab a M29 Smith, and confront the guy, im standing naked pointing a large pistol at this guy, who is reading my mail,
obviously drunk..
he realized right away, he was in the wrong apt.
i said, DUDE, your really in the wrong home, he had the oh Sh*t look on his face, and back out my door, leaving his keys.
i went back to bed,
next morning, he brother came to my door, and explained, and asked for his brothers keys.
and thanked me for not shooting his drunk brother..
the first rule of firearm safety is to be sure of your target and whats beyond it.
let me clarify, if someone is in my home, my shop, or ect, that wants to hurt me, or steal from me, they will likely leave in giant ziplock bag.
if someone is hurt, lost, or needs help, ill be the first to put my hand out, and give them that help.
a drunk, or confused person, who you know isnt a threat, or wanting to steal or harm you, needs your help, not the bus end of your rifle.

remember..once you pull that trigger, your life will never be the same, and you can never bring that bullet back..
even the biggest ego, will suffer from a death, warranted or not.

For a break in I use a 45ACP Smith 625 first and easiest to get to on the night stand also have a 18" barreled 870 with trap loads but I have to get out of bed for that one..

I was thinking the AR would have some visual effect to young people with baggy pants, hats on backwards crowd. Now you might think I'm racial at this point but no in my community we have no people of color. We do have lowlife that in a circumstance of civil unrest would go for the weakest for personal gain.

Now a man on his property armed with a Ar might have the effect that this person isn't a victim and we should go down the road and find a easier target. This stupid crown wouldn't have the same fear of a M-1 because they are stupid but would recognize the Black Rifle.

Anyway to me that would be the only value to own the AR. I don't usually feel well enough to shoot the few firearms I do have so not looking to buy anything new.
