This idea comes from a thread on the british gun sight. A bunch of the snider shooters have made temparary front sights out of pvc pipe. They cut a notch like that on the standard bayonet and glue a taller sight post on it and paint it black. File it down at the range to siight the rifle. Non-altering or damaging.

I made front sights for my 1884. I just knock out the pin and install various height sight blades to get precise POA at various yard ranges.
