Is the above book by Duncan McCollum a good reference source? Is there something better?

It is an inexpensive "starter book" for $18.95 on Amazon. Next step up is Military Rifles Of Japan by Honeycutt, $43.59. It covers rifles from the Murata (1880) thru the last of the last (1945), with descriptions and pictures of each model. Then there are specialty books on the type 38 rifle and the type 99 rifle.

It is a very good quick reference book with all the basic info. I generally look at it first for info then go to Honeycutts book if I need more info.

If I lost mine, I'd probably buy it again.

I am not a serious jap collector and I find that book all I need! Good starter, gun show reference!

I picked up a 1977 ed. of Fred Honeycutt's Military Rifles of Japan for 75 cents at a yard sale. I think I did all right! I'm assuming there are later editions?

Mine's the fifth edition printed in 1996. But it's probably still featuring the original cast. They've been out of business since 1945. :>)

It's more than double the price and overkill for a beginner. McCollum's book is great for beginners. Where you do have a good point though is that if you have enough interest to buy a book, you will probably end up with the Honeycutt book later anyways.

Now, If I ever get the self control to stop adding to my gunshow guide, that'll be a must have book...LOL I think I am about there though.
