I think CptEnglehorn's 1/16 inch "s" is throwing us off. The early RIA "S" is about 1/4 inch, SA "s" about 1/8.

I misread that one as well, it looks to be 1/4, if it was 1/16 id probably overlook it as a nick.
OK, so the Cpt. has a pre-WWI RIA stock.
My question - Is the 1/4" "S" stamped on all RIA stocks prior to WWI, or just ones that have been altered?
As far as I know, all 1913 RIA stocks and before.

After 1913 were the stocks stamped RI, also the S indicates the stock was shortened, right.
Rock Island closed down their rifle production line from the latter part of 1913 to very late 1916 or early 1917, when the RI-marked stock was seen.
