Default Heck of a nice guy!

Brother-in-law dropped by today. GAVE me a Springfield M2! (His wife is not pro-gun). I'd been pestering him on and off to sell it to me, but he insisted on just giving it to me.

Background on the rifle. My father-in-law was assigned to the Pualoa Rifle Range on Oahu in the early 60's. According to his son, he purchased the Springfield M2 (serial 6378) for the use of his two sons.

The underside of the stock has a drawing number of D28225. On the cap of the pistol grip is marked "M2". Upper bolt root is marked "M2". Underside of root is marked "F". There are no other markings on the stock. The bolt is marked "M2" and has the rifle serial number electo-penciled on it. According to Brophy, the bolt has the 3rd type (hex head) headspace adjustment screw. The barrel is dated 12-33, with a blade front sight and has "Long Rifle Cartage Only" stamped on the left rear side, forward of the receiver. No magazines with the weapon - (I ordered two M2 repo's locally). Although I see no rebuild marks on the stock, I assume it was rebuilt at one time, seeing as the interior bolt recesses are not 'in the white'.

Maybe I should go out tonight and buy a lottery ticket!

Wow, one heck of a nice guy, sorry about his wife's attitudes. My old boss had a mansion in a gated community near KC, Mo. His wife hated/disliked guns until there was a home invasion near them & I told him to ask her how she would defend their two pre-school age kids if it happened to them. At that point his huge old yellow Lab male was allowed in the house & Sam bought her a Rem 1100 20 ga & cut down the barrel for her & taught her how to use it.

You might mention this to him, it just might help him out. Congrats on getting a great rifle, my guess is that Herschel could point you to a correct mag or two if you asked him......

Dan, The rifle would not have come with any cartouches except for the M2 on the pistol grip bottom. The area that should be in the white is the round channel the bolt moves in. It can be easily seen around the top of magazine well. I would encourage you to get a correct original magazine. They will be marked M2 on the top left side and may be either blue or parkerized. Most any time you can find one listed on the big internet gun auction. Do a search for 1922 Springfield or M2 Springfield. They usually sell for $100 to $125. Aftermarket magazine have a bad reputation for reliability. Good luck with yours. I see the replacement magazines without saying whether it is for a 1922M1 or M2. They are not the same. The M2 magazine is slightly longer, allowing it to extend higher into the receiver. An M2 bolt may over-ride the top cartridge in a 1922M1 magazine.
