There used to be a front sight for the AR that had cross hairs. It was in my opinion worthless. And yes, I tried it. You are not supposed to aim with the rear, only look through it. Your eye will naturally center the top of the front post, if you don't try to over analyze it. A cross hair in the rear would obscure a lot of target.

Your eye will automatically center on the rear aperture. With proper focus on the front sight, correct sight alignment with the top of the post centered left to right, and up and down in the blurry rear sight aperture can be achieved. It would be impossible to focus on a rear sight crosshair, and if you could, you would lose the front sight, and target completely.
For accurate shooting you must see the front sight clearly, or you will not be able to determine correct sight alignment.
As we get older it is easier for the target to suck your eye into it. Get a Bob Jones lens, or Microsite, and you will see the front sight as well as any teenager. The key to sight alignment is focus on a clear front sight post. Let the target be blurry, and grey. You cannot focus at two places at the same time. You can however achieve a compromise with the right lens in a hooded rear aperture.

+1 on the MicroSight! I have one on my AR15 for Highpower Rifle competition, and it breathed new life into my shooting! I'm 59 years old and simply could not maintain a good sight picture without having eye strain issues so bad that the aiming black at 600 yards would disappear. The MicroSight lets me see the target and the sight post in sharp focus, both at the same time, with a relaxed eye.
A pal of mine bought a new Bushmaster A2 carbine..and swore it had 'crosshairs' in the big rear peep hole.
I looked at it..and it was actually lint....
That is the advantage of peep sights---look thru it, do not concentrate on it, so your eye only has to focus two things instead of three! That fact is no longer stressed or taught and new shooters do not know!
