Actually, this light bulb is the result of the L-Prize started by the Department of Energy to develop a more efficient bulb than the incandescent bulb. The prize was announced in 2007. Philip's entered the competition in 2009 and was the only competitor. They won in Aug. 2011, and were awarded the $10 million prize plus a government contract to be considered by U.S. agencies when purchasing replacement bulbs.
The bulb has to be equivalent to 60 watts, last for at least 25,000 hours and be made in America.
I'm sure that the government will think that paying 50 times more for something that lasts 30 times longer is a bargain. And paying out $10 million after delivery is better than paying $551 million before delivery.
buttebob, you forget to take into account the energy cost. In the long run, it should save you money.
John, The idea of spending $1,000 to replace the lights in an average house is obviously a huge setback for most people.
I invested in flourescent bulbs years ago and haven't looked back. The savings in electric costs have been great. LED lights fix some of the problems of flourescents and should save more energy........but $50 a bulb? REALLY?
I own firearms not to fight against my government, but to ensure I will not have to.
