    Default Another Interesting Smith Corona

There's another recent thread with an early Smith Corona that is arsenal redone. The Gunbroker auction is over $1000 now http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/Vie...Item=278344418. That auction prompted me to post pictures of mine. It is an early, 6 groove. The only non-SC parts are the stock, the band spring and the lower band which is Remington. It obviously lacks the correct stock. The follower is parked.

So what are your thoughts on it? What parts should I aquire to make it correct?

Beautiful rifle. Other that the components you listed, I can only suggest that the trigger guard should be a small bow.

Allen, are you saying that because the rifle is early SC and TG is late SC?. But what diff does it make if the stock is not correct?? Still a beautiful typewriter company product. Tom

PS, I noticed that my 6 groove will not out-shoot any of my 2 or 4 grooves. 2 groove with right bullet weight seems to do the best of all (hard to figure), Just my 10 cents.

Tom-Yes, I am comparing it (trigger guard) to the SN. And Yes again, it is still a smokin' cool rifle in my book, just like you say!

Restoring your rifle is a personal decision. And the level of authenticity you choose is likewise a personal decision. I will pose the following for consideration:

    (1) Replacing the stock and handguard with a pin-reinforced Smith-Corona stock and handguard.

    (2) As Allen Humphrey pointed out, replacing the trigger guard with a small bow Smith-Corona trigger guard.

Both of these items can be obtained without too much difficulty and expense.

I will make you aware, however, that Smith-Corona made numerous design and marking changes throughout their production run. Finding the correct early parts contemporary with the rifle's serial number would be extraordinarily challenging, assuming that you knew what they looked like. I would, therefore, settle for the foregoing listed items. Certainly with those changes, the rifle would at least appear correct to all but the most experienced eye.

    Hope this helps. Good Luck!

The number of grooves in the bore is but one of perhaps more than a score of factors which affect accuracy. And most of those factors are variable and have FAR, FAR MORE prevalence than the number of grooves in the bore. Unless one stabilizes those variable factors and/or has thousands of statistical samples, one is in no position to compare accuracy based on the number of grooves in the bore.

    For what it's worth.

Concur. First, most important factor is the fella yanking on the trigger. I've seen rifles that couldn't be counted on to put two shots into the same barn from the inside with the door shut, and then handed to a good shot who will put 'em through the same hole with that same rifle.
