    Default Suppressed M1 Carbines?

Outside of personal collections and films, I don't recall ever seeing a suppressed M1 Carbine. Just out of curiosity, was this ever done by a military or police department? Would anyone have pictures of said?

    Thanks.

I don't think it would do much good.. I doubt the military would ever do it.. the carbine was designed to be a rear area weapon, and the 110 gr bullet would still make a lot of noise goign super sonic and you don;t want it going subsonic.. under 1000 fps..so I just don't see a military need to justify.. the effort.. not sure about a Police dept either.. I don't think the Swat team wanted a under powered rifle suppressed when they can get the MP5 already in the same cal they carry in their side arm.. so no, I've never seen one either.. B2B

I've never seen one and I hope not to. That would be one ugly little rife, wouldn't it?

    Rivet,
Yes there was and its pictured in several silencer books. It was built on a 9xx,xxx Inland and was a intregal unit for the OSS. It has a short ported barrel and large baffles. Velocity was reduced to subsonic and was very accurate . Don't know if it was ever used.

There were a bit less then 100 trial and test units made. None were acceptable as there was no way to stop the crack of the bullet breaking the sound barrier. Some carbines were shipped to England where they were modified into bolt action units with barrels shortened to 10 inches using an Enfield silencer. These did work after a fashion but it was found that they were still louder then a silenced Sten gun so the project was finally dropped.

Here in New Zealand suppressed .22s are common. I own a couple. Sub sonic ammunition is vital and in the case of the .22 rimfire not lacking a lot less performance than the standard velocity stuff. American made .22 are very popular here and at times it feels that every small game hunter has a Ruger 10/22.
Some, not all, American semi auto .22s don’t like the subsonic ammo they were not designed for. Not enough grunt to operate the action. When this happens we cautiously replace or remove coils from return springs. Not sure what you could do to a carbine to make it function with less pressure.
Any suppressed semi auto will always have the small problem of the noise of the action being cycled. My favourite suppressed .22 is my B.S.A. single shot Martini. No noise from the action but not a combat weapon at any stretch of the imagination.

To keep the action quiet you have to be able to lock the slide like the S&W Hush Puppy 9mm developed for the Navy Seals in Viet Nam.(This pistol later became the S&W 659) There was a lock on the left side to prevent the slide from working so there was no noise till the operator unlocked the slide and worked the action by hand. The 147 gr HP 9mm round was designed for it and the seals really like it for taking out VC sentries and dogs. Very quiet in operation and being sub sonic no bullet crack.

I like the look of that. Thank you. Got anymore information on it?
