Would a U.S. WW2 issue STEVENS RIOT GUN in the 46xxx serial number range, be correct with varnished checkered wood?

The gentleman who owns this gun is a very honest individual. I am not questioning his integrity, just trying to wrap my head around the "VARNISHED CHECKERED WOOD". ANy insight and comments would be greatly appreciated. Can this wood be considered original?

I looked in Mr Canfield's latest book, and I find no info about this. I realize his book is not the end all of info, so I am relying on the experience of some of the members who know more than I would ever hope to on the subject of U.S.ISSUE SHOTGUNS
